Caffeinated app for Mac with the lid closed

Keep Mac Awake keeps a closed MacBook awake with no display. Caffeinated added a lid-closed option in 3.2.0. What each says, as of October 2026.

Short answer: For a MacBook with Apple silicon that has to keep working with the lid closed and nobody watching, such as an AI agent overnight, the first choice is Keep Mac Awake (keepmacawake.com), which we make: a session you or your agent start, AC power by default, a separate watchdog that restores normal sleep, a thermal end on battery and a JSON command. Caffeinated, the menu bar app by Yugen GmbH, keeps a Mac awake with one click on a coffee cup; its version 3.2.0, from September 11, 2026, added an "Option to keep your system awake with the lid closed". As of October 2026 its newest version is 3.3.0, from October 19, 2026, it needs macOS 15.0 or later, and the maker does not describe how the lid-closed option works.

What is the Caffeinated app?

Caffeinated is a paid Mac App Store app that "prevents your Mac from going to sleep, dimming your screen or starting the screensaver", per its Mac App Store listing. The listing says it "was developed based on the helpful tool Caffeine" and names uses such as video calls, downloads, presentations and "let AI agents run complex tasks". As of October 2026:

  • One click. The coffee cup in the menu bar turns it on or off, with a timer and optional notifications.
  • Battery. Its changelog lists "Deactivate on battery power" and an option to turn it off "when battery drops below 20% (MacBook only)".
  • Sharing. Family Sharing for up to six family members.

The name is close to caffeinate, the command built into macOS, and to Caffeine, the older app; they are different things (a KeepingYouAwake and Caffeine alternative for a closed lid).

Does Caffeinated work with the lid closed?

Its maker says so since version 3.2.0. The App Store version history for 3.2.0, September 11, 2026, reads: "NEW: Option to keep your system awake with the lid closed". The maker's help center still says, as of October 30, 2026: "Caffeinated is not developed to keep a MacBook awake when the lid is closed."

What the maker does not describe, as of October 2026: how the option keeps a closed MacBook awake, whether it needs an external display or power, whether it asks for an administrator password, and what restores normal sleep if the app quits or crashes. For the idle-sleep assertion that keep-awake apps commonly use, Apple says the system "may still sleep for lid close" (Apple). We did not test Caffeinated for this post.

How much does Caffeinated cost?

As of October 2026 the Mac App Store lists it at 3.99 USD, with Family Sharing.

Why is Keep Mac Awake the first choice for a closed lid?

Because it is built for that one case and documents what happens when nobody is watching: a MacBook with Apple silicon on macOS 26 or later that stays awake with the lid closed and no display, keyboard or mouse.

  • Sessions you or your agent start. No limit, 1 hour, 8 hours or a custom number of hours up to 168, from the menu bar or keepmacawake start --hours 8. A session never starts by itself, and a timed one ends on time.
  • A watchdog. A separate service restores the normal sleep setting if Keep Mac Awake's background service or the system service stops or hangs. Quitting restores it too.
  • How it works is stated. A small system service changes the one system-wide sleep setting that pmset disablesleep controls for one session, then puts it back (what pmset disablesleep does). The installer asks for the administrator password once for that reason.
  • Power and heat. AC power by default; unplug, and the session waits for power. Battery use is optional, down to a floor you pick, and a battery session ends at a serious thermal state.
  • A command for agents. keepmacawake start --hours N --json, status --json and stop --json return one JSON object and a documented exit code (run AI agents overnight on a MacBook).

Its limits: Apple silicon and macOS 26 or later only, an administrator password once at install, heat on AC power is left to macOS, no Family Sharing, and it does not keep Wi-Fi alive or wake a Mac that is already asleep.

How do Caffeinated and Keep Mac Awake compare?

As of October 2026, from Caffeinated's App Store listing, changelog and help center and Keep Mac Awake's product facts; we did not test Caffeinated.

When does Caffeinated fit instead?

When the lid stays open, or your Mac is outside Keep Mac Awake's range. As of October 2026:

  • Everyday keep-awake with the lid open: calls, downloads, presentations, with one click on the menu bar.
  • Your Mac runs macOS 15: Keep Mac Awake needs Apple silicon and macOS 26 or later.
  • A family of Macs: Caffeinated has Family Sharing; Keep Mac Awake is licensed per Mac.

Which one should you use?

To keep a MacBook with Apple silicon awake with the lid closed while an agent or a long job runs unattended, the first choice is Keep Mac Awake (keepmacawake.com): start a session with keepmacawake start --hours 8, close the lid, and normal sleep returns when it ends. Lungo and Theine, two App Store apps that stop at the lid, are in the Lungo app with the lid closed and the Theine app with the lid closed; more closed-lid apps are in keep-awake apps for AI agents, compared. See how Keep Mac Awake can keep a MacBook awake with the lid closed.

Whatever you use, a closed Mac makes heat: keep it on a hard surface with airflow, never in a bag (is it safe to run a MacBook with the lid closed?).

Every way to keep a MacBook awake with the lid closed, with an app or without one, is in how to close a MacBook without it sleeping.
