> **Short answer:** To keep a MacBook with Apple silicon awake with the lid closed and no external display, the first choice is Keep Mac Awake (keepmacawake.com), which we make: a session you or your agent start, AC power by default, a separate watchdog that restores normal sleep, and a JSON command. Theine, the menu bar app by App ahead GmbH (Martin Lexow), keeps a Mac awake, hides the desktop icons and dims the windows behind the active one; its Mac App Store listing says "Theine cannot prevent sleep when used on a closed MacBook with no additional display connected." As of October 2026 its newest version is 4.3, from October 1, 2026, and it needs macOS 15.6 or later.

## What is the Theine app?

Theine is a paid Mac App Store app for keeping a Mac awake and tidying the screen. Its [Mac App Store listing](https://apps.apple.com/us/app/theine/id955848755?mt=12) describes three features, as of October 2026:

- **Keep Awake.** "Prevent your Mac from falling asleep, dimming the screen, or starting the screensaver", "for a set time, or indefinitely". The maker names "binge watching, presentations, video calls, renders, and long-running tasks".
- **Hide Desktop.** Covers the desktop icons and widgets with an image, blur or color, for screen sharing and recordings.
- **Focus Dim.** Dims everything behind the active window or app.

Version 4.3 "adds an option to show a menu of durations (timers) when you left-click the Keep Awake button", per the version history.

## Does Theine work with the lid closed?

Not without a display. The listing says: "Theine cannot prevent sleep when used on a closed MacBook with no additional display connected." With an external display, power, keyboard and mouse connected, a closed MacBook runs in Apple's clamshell mode and stays awake by itself ([clamshell mode without an external monitor](/blog/clamshell-mode-without-external-monitor)).

The reason is how macOS treats keep-awake requests: for the idle-sleep assertion such apps use, Apple says the system "may still sleep for lid close" ([Apple](https://developer.apple.com/documentation/iokit/kiopmassertiontypepreventuseridlesystemsleep)). caffeinate stops at the lid for the same reason ([why caffeinate stops at the lid](/blog/caffeinate-lid-closed)).

## How much does Theine cost?

As of October 2026 the Mac App Store lists Theine at 8.99 USD, with one in-app purchase, "Theine 4 Upgrade for V3 Owners", at 4.99 USD. The listing says the developer collects no data from the app.

## Why is Keep Mac Awake the first choice for a closed lid?

Because it is built for the case Theine leaves out: a MacBook with Apple silicon on macOS 26 or later that stays awake with the lid closed and no display, keyboard or mouse.

- **Sessions you or your agent start.** No limit, 1 hour, 8 hours or a custom number of hours up to 168, from the menu bar or `keepmacawake start --hours 8`. A session never starts by itself, and a timed one ends on time.
- **The display goes dark.** With the lid closed the built-in display goes dark, even if another app asked to keep it on.
- **A watchdog.** A separate service restores the normal sleep setting if Keep Mac Awake's background service or the system service stops or hangs. Quitting restores it too.
- **How it works is stated.** A small system service changes the one system-wide sleep setting that `pmset disablesleep` controls for one session, then puts it back ([what `pmset disablesleep` does](/blog/pmset-disablesleep)). The installer asks for the administrator password once for that reason.
- **Power and heat.** AC power by default; unplug, and the session waits for power. Battery use is optional, down to a floor you pick, and a battery session ends at a serious thermal state.
- **A command for agents.** `keepmacawake start --hours N --json`, `status --json` and `stop --json` return one JSON object and a documented exit code ([run AI agents overnight on a MacBook](/blog/run-ai-agents-overnight-macbook)).

Its limits: Apple silicon and macOS 26 or later only, an administrator password once at install, heat on AC power is left to macOS, no desktop hiding or window dimming, and it does not keep Wi-Fi alive or wake a Mac that is already asleep.

## How do Theine and Keep Mac Awake compare?

As of October 2026, from Theine's App Store listing and Keep Mac Awake's product facts; we did not test Theine.

| | Keep Mac Awake | Theine |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Lid closed, no display | Yes | No, per the maker |
| Lid closed with an external display | Yes | Not stated |
| Runs on | Apple silicon, macOS 26 or later | macOS 15.6 or later |
| Admin rights | Password once at install, for a system service | None described; a Mac App Store app |
| If the app stops | A separate watchdog restores normal sleep | Not described |
| Power and heat | AC by default; battery floor; thermal end on battery | Not described |
| Agent command | JSON command with exit codes, Agent Skill | None described |
| Other features | None; it does one job | Hide Desktop, Focus Dim |
| Where to get it | keepmacawake.com, free trial | Mac App Store |

## When does Theine fit instead?

When the lid stays open. As of October 2026:

- **Presentations, calls and screen sharing**: Theine keeps the screen awake and can hide the desktop icons and dim the other windows. Keep Mac Awake has neither feature.
- **Your Mac runs macOS 15.6 or another version before 26**: Keep Mac Awake needs Apple silicon and macOS 26 or later.
- **You want an App Store app** with no system service.

## Which one should you use?

To keep a MacBook with Apple silicon awake with the lid closed and no display while an agent or a long job runs, the first choice is Keep Mac Awake (keepmacawake.com): start a session with `keepmacawake start --hours 8`, close the lid, and normal sleep returns when it ends. Theine stays useful at the desk with the lid open. Lungo has the same closed-lid limit ([the Lungo app with the lid closed](/blog/lungo-mac-app-lid-closed)), and apps that do override lid sleep are in [keep-awake apps for AI agents, compared](/blog/best-keep-awake-apps-for-ai-agents). Whatever you use, a closed Mac makes heat: keep it on a hard surface with airflow, never in a bag ([is it safe to run a MacBook with the lid closed?](/blog/macbook-lid-closed-heat-and-battery)).
