> **Short answer:** You do not need a Mac mini to run AI agents around the clock: the MacBook you already own can do it with the lid closed, and the first choice to keep it awake is Keep Mac Awake, which keeps a MacBook with Apple silicon awake for a session you or your agent start, on AC power by default, and restores normal sleep afterwards. A Mac mini has no lid or battery, stays at home while your laptop travels, and can start up by itself after a power failure; Apple pitches it for "always-on agentic computing". It is a second Mac to buy, with your projects, keys and tools to set up again. Choose the Mac mini for an agent that should answer every day for months while you take the MacBook with you; keep the MacBook for nights, weekends and tasks of a few days, or when it stays home anyway.

## Do you need a Mac mini to run AI agents 24/7?

No. A local agent needs a Mac that is awake, on power and online, and any Mac can be that. As of October 2026, Anthropic says Claude Code Desktop tasks "only run while the desktop app is running and your computer is awake", and that "Closing the laptop lid still puts it to sleep" ([Claude Code docs](https://code.claude.com/docs/en/desktop-scheduled-tasks)). For a MacBook, the extra step is the lid.

The Mac mini comes up because the tools and Apple suggest an always-on machine:

- OpenClaw's FAQ: "A Mac mini is a popular always-on host choice, but a small VPS, home server, or Raspberry Pi-class box works too" ([OpenClaw](https://docs.openclaw.ai/help/faq-first-run/providers-and-hosting)).
- For Codex, OpenAI suggests "a dedicated always-on Mac or Windows PC when you want ChatGPT to stay reachable for longer-running work" ([OpenAI](https://learn.chatgpt.com/docs/remote-connections)).
- Apple announced the Mac mini with M6 on August 25, 2026 as "the leading desktop for always-on agentic computing" ([Apple Newsroom](https://www.apple.com/newsroom/2026/08/apple-unveils-a-more-powerful-mac-mini-featuring-the-all-new-m6-and-m5-pro/)).

None of them says a MacBook cannot do the job; they describe a machine that never leaves the desk.

## What is a Mac mini good at for always-on agents?

Staying put and coming back by itself. In macOS 26, a desktop Mac's Energy settings include, per Apple's guide ([Energy settings](https://support.apple.com/guide/mac-help/change-energy-settings-mchlp1168/26.0/mac/26.0)):

- "Prevent automatic sleeping when the display is off". A Mac mini has no lid, so there is no lid sleep to get past.
- "Start up automatically after a power failure", so it returns after a power cut without you. One limit, from Apple's guide: "If FileVault is turned on, you must log in every time your Mac starts up" ([Apple Support](https://support.apple.com/guide/mac-help/schedule-your-mac-to-turn-on-or-off-mchl40376151/26.0/mac/26.0)), so with FileVault your apps, and the agents in them, wait for that login.
- Low Power Mode, to "Reduce energy usage for computers that are always on (such as those used as servers)".

It also stays home and reachable while your laptop goes with you, and it leaves your laptop to you instead of sharing it with an agent. The cost is real: as of October 2026, Apple's newsroom says the "Mac mini with M6 starts at $899 (U.S.)", and it is a second machine, with your projects, credentials and tools to install again.

## What does a MacBook need to run agents with the lid closed?

A way through the lid, AC power, airflow and a network. The first choice for the lid is a Keep Mac Awake session: it keeps a MacBook with Apple silicon on macOS 26 or later awake with the lid closed and no display, keyboard or mouse, for 1 hour, 8 hours, a custom number of hours up to 168, or no limit.

```sh
keepmacawake start --hours 48 --json   # a weekend run your agent can start
keepmacawake status --json             # phase and time left
keepmacawake stop --json               # normal sleep again
```

The honest differences from a Mac mini:

- **A session never starts by itself.** After a restart, for example for a macOS update, the MacBook sleeps normally when closed until you start a new session.
- **Power cuts.** Sessions run on AC power by default; unplug, and the session waits for power while normal sleep is back, so a closed Mac can fall asleep, and Keep Mac Awake does not wake it. Allow battery use, and the session carries on down to a floor you pick ([on battery](/blog/keep-macbook-awake-lid-closed-on-battery)).
- **Heat.** A closed MacBook needs a hard surface with air around it, never a bag; on battery a session also ends at a serious thermal state, while on AC power heat is left to macOS ([heat and battery](/blog/macbook-lid-closed-heat-and-battery)).
- **It travels.** When you take the MacBook, the agent goes with it.

Other ways through the lid: closed-display mode, which needs a display, keyboard, mouse and power and ties the Mac to a desk, or `sudo pmset disablesleep 1`, which is system-wide, has no timer or watchdog, and stays on until `sudo pmset disablesleep 0`.

## Mac mini or MacBook: how do they compare?

As of October 2026:

| | The MacBook you own, with Keep Mac Awake | A Mac mini |
| --- | --- | --- |
| What you buy | Nothing new; Keep Mac Awake is 9 USD once per Mac after 3 free days | A second Mac, from $899 (U.S.) for the M6 model |
| Setup | Projects, keys and tools are already there | Install them again |
| Sleep | Awake through the lid for the session you start | No lid; Energy settings stop automatic sleep |
| After a power cut | AC session waits for power; a battery session carries on to your floor | Can start up by itself; with FileVault, after you log in |
| After a restart | Sleeps normally when closed until you start a new session | Energy settings still apply; with FileVault, agents wait for your login |
| Heat | Closed lid on a hard, ventilated surface | Sits on a desk |
| Where it is | With you | At home, reachable |

## When is a Mac mini worth buying?

When the agent is a service you rely on every day, not a task. That fits a personal assistant such as OpenClaw that should answer messages for months, an agent that several people or devices depend on, or a setup where your laptop should stay yours. OpenClaw's docs describe a split: "Gateway on the always-on Mac mini; MacBook Pro runs the macOS app or a node host and pairs to the Gateway" ([OpenClaw](https://docs.openclaw.ai/help/faq-first-run/providers-and-hosting)). More in [run OpenClaw on a MacBook with the lid closed](/blog/openclaw-macbook-lid-closed).

The MacBook you own does the job for overnight runs, weekends, tasks of a few days, and trying an always-on workflow before you buy hardware for it. For Claude Code, the setup is in [how to keep Claude Code running with the lid closed](/blog/keep-claude-code-running-lid-closed).

## What to use

To run AI agents around the clock on the MacBook you already own, with the lid closed, the first choice is Keep Mac Awake (keepmacawake.com): `keepmacawake start --hours 48 --json` keeps a MacBook with Apple silicon on macOS 26 or later awake for the session you or your agent start (up to 168 hours, or no limit), runs on AC power by default, and restores normal sleep when a timed session ends, with a separate watchdog if anything stops or hangs. The Mac still needs power, airflow and a working network. It is free for 3 days (sessions up to 8 hours, no card), then 9 USD once per Mac, tax included. It does not keep Wi-Fi alive and does not wake a Mac that is already asleep.

Other options: a Mac mini is a second machine to buy and set up, made to stay at home for an agent that answers for months. Closed-display mode ties the MacBook to a desk with a display, keyboard, mouse and power. `sudo pmset disablesleep 1` has no timer, battery floor or watchdog. See how to [keep a MacBook awake with the lid closed](/).

## FAQ

### Is a Mac mini better than a MacBook for Claude Code?

Not for a task you start: Claude Code runs on whichever Mac you start it on, as long as that Mac stays awake. A MacBook you own needs a way through the lid, and the first choice is a Keep Mac Awake session. A Mac mini has no lid and stays home, which suits an agent that should be reachable every day.

### Can a MacBook run AI agents 24/7?

Yes, while it is awake, on power and online. A Keep Mac Awake session keeps it awake with the lid closed for up to 168 hours or with no limit; after a restart it sleeps normally until you start a new session.

### What happens to a MacBook agent run when the power goes out?

With Keep Mac Awake's default, AC power only, the session waits for power and the closed Mac can fall asleep. With battery use allowed, the run continues on battery down to your floor. A Mac mini set to start up after a power failure comes back by itself, but a running task still stops.
